Luke Runyon, editor-in-chief of The Journal, the student-run newspaper at the University of Illinois Springfield, has been named a 2010 recipient of the University of Illinois Alumni Association Student Leadership Award, which recognizes outstanding student leadership. Runyon will be recognized at a student awards luncheon in May.
Runyon, who holds close to a 4.0 grade-point average, has print, broadcast, and online media experience. He rose up through the ranks at The Journal, starting as a reporter and photographer and later becoming copy editor and editor-in-chief. He held an internship in summer 2009 with WUIS-FM Public Radio. In addition, Runyon is vice president of a communication student academic honors society at UIS, spent his 2009 spring break helping victims of Hurricane Katrina with lingering construction projects, and is a mentor to new college students at UIS. He is graduating in May from UIS.
