2012 “Shoot Chicago” winners

Here are the winning photos from our annual “Shoot Chicago” photo contest, held this past weekend at the ICPA convention. Twenty student photographers completed the assignment: “Invisible Chicago.” Our judges — veteran news photographers Chuck Berman and Steve Kagan — chose the following four shots as the winners.

First Place: Emily Mohney
The Leader, Elmhurst College

Second Place: Tiela Halpin
Columbia Chronicle, Columbia College

“I’ve lived here my entire life and I didn’t know this was here,” says Jason Ortiz, 31, of Chicago, peering through the bars into the McCormick Bridgehouse and Chicago River Museum. “I feel there’s a lot of places like this that most Chicagoans just don’t see.”

Third Place: Ting Shen
Columbia Chronicle, Columbia College

Workers are seen in their office cubicles finishing up work for the day near Washington and Wells on Friday, Feb. 17. Chicago has a large, invisible workforce that goes mostly unnoticed by tourists every day.

Honorable Mention: Martha Warfel

Columbia Chronicle’s Keil wins ‘shootout’

Andy Keil of the Columbia Chronicle took first place in the ‘Great Chicago Shootout’ held Feb. 19 as part of the annual ICPA conference. Student photographers were told to find images that portray contrast Friday afternoon in Chicago. (more…)

Sulski honored for lifetime service

January 22, 2010

Former ICPA President Jim Sulski (above right), a newspaper adviser and journalism professor at Columbia College, died Jan. 7 after a three-year battle with cancer. Sulski will be honored during the award banquet Feb. 20. The ICPA honored Sulski for his service to the college press this fall by giving him a meritorious service award.

Illinois college media win national journalism awards

Illinois college media excelled at the national collegiate journalism convention, winning more than 20 awards for exceptional journalism last weekend in Austin, Texas.


Columbia College

Three Illinois schools earned ACP Pacemakers in the four-year college non-daily division – The Columbia Chronicle (Columbia College), F News Magazine (School of the Art Institute of Chicago), and the Chicago Maroon (University of Chicago). The Pacemaker, sometimes called college journalism’s Pulitzer Prize, is earned for consistently solid coverage across a full year.

Two schools were finalists in the Pacemaker’s four-year daily newspaper division – Northern Star (Northern Illinois University) and Daily Northwestern (Northwestern).

Eastern Illinois University’s earned a Pacemaker in the online division for four-year dailies, while the University of Illinois’s earned one in the ‘other’ category. The was a finalist in the four-year daily online division while the Columbia Chronicle Online was a finalist in the four-year non-daily online division. (more…)
