Sun-Times EIC to keynote at 33rd ICPA convention

Jim Kirk, senior vice president and editor-in-chief of the Chicago Sun-Times will deliver the keynote address at the 33rd annual Illinois College Press Association convention, which is set for Feb. 19-20 at the DoubleTree Hotel Chicago Magnificent Mile, 300 E. Ohio St.

Kirk’s keynote is scheduled for 4 p.m. and will cap Friday’s sessions.

Members of the Chicago Press corps will lead sessions for college journalists on Friday and Saturday. A photo shootout competition Friday will culminate with Saturday morning critiques by two photojournalists. The annual awards luncheon on Saturday will honor the winners of the annual editorial and advertising contest.

The convention opens Friday with registration beginning at 1 p.m. and sessions beginning at 1:30 p.m. Saturday will feature more sessions beginning at 9:30 a.m., followed by the awards luncheon at noon. The ICPA board and interested advisers will meet at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.

A complete convention schedule will be available Friday at the registration desk.

More than 300 people representing 32 schools have registered to attend.

The ICPA is an organization of student newspapers at four-year public and private universities in Illinois.


2012 “Shoot Chicago” winners

Here are the winning photos from our annual “Shoot Chicago” photo contest, held this past weekend at the ICPA convention. Twenty student photographers completed the assignment: “Invisible Chicago.” Our judges — veteran news photographers Chuck Berman and Steve Kagan — chose the following four shots as the winners.

Pulitzer winner to keynote convention

Mark Konkol, who with a team of Chicago Sun-Times staff members won a Pulitzer Prize for Local Reporting in 2011, will be the keynote speaker at the 29th Annual ICPA Convention Feb. 17-18 at the Double Tree Hotel Chicago Magnificent Mile, 300 E. Ohio St.

Konkol, a writer at-large at the Sun-Times, was part of a team that examined the “immersive documentation of violence in Chicago neighborhoods, probing the lives of victims, criminals and detectives as a widespread code of silence impedes solutions.”


ICPA membership drive, contest under way

Now is the time for Illinois College Press Association member newspapers to pay their dues to be eligible to enter the annual contest Dec. 6 and attend the annual convention Feb. 17-18 in Chicago.

Members must pay their dues by Dec. 1 or at least send in a membership form on page 4 of this newsletter and have the check in the mail.


Columbia’s Brake wins ‘Shoot Chicago’

Brock Brake, Columbia College / Construction continues on St. Clair Street and Grand Street between restaurants Volare and Mary's Cafe.

Columbia College’s Brock Brake won the Shoot Chicago photography competition during the Illinois College Press Association’s annual conference held Feb. 18-19. Brake was among 18 student-journalists searching for photos connected to the theme ‘work.’

Brake’s photo, above, shows a construction worker working between St. Clair and Grand streets, where restaurants Volare and Mary’s Cafe remain open. (more…)

Tribune’s Warren to be keynote speaker at annual convention Feb. 18-19 in Chicago

Ellen Warren, senior correspondent for the Chicago Tribune, will be the keynote speaker at the 28th Annual ICPA Convention Feb. 18-19 at the Double Tree Hotel Chicago Magnificent Mile, 300 E. Ohio St.

Warren has been a local, national political, congreesional, U.S. Supreme Court, foreign and war correspondent.  Warren pioneered the Tribune’s first political blog with her coverage of the 2004 presidential race. She’s also been a metro and features columnist and, early in her career, was the first woman legman for the late, great Chicago columnist Mike Royko.

ICPA members should make hotel reservations as soon as possible and register for the convention with secretary-treasurer John Ryan.  Reservations must be made by Feb. 3 to get the convention rate of $115 a night up to  quad occupancy. (more…)

Happy 2011! It’s time to start thinking about the annual convention, which will be held Feb. 18-19 at the DoubleTree Hotel Chicago Magnificent Mile, 300 E. Ohio St., Chicago, 312-787-6100.

We’re currently lining up convention speakers and tallying all the winners of the annual editorial contest, which will be announced at the convention.


Columbia Chronicle’s Keil wins ‘shootout’

Andy Keil of the Columbia Chronicle took first place in the ‘Great Chicago Shootout’ held Feb. 19 as part of the annual ICPA conference. Student photographers were told to find images that portray contrast Friday afternoon in Chicago. (more…)

Zorn headlines ’10 convention

Eric Zorn, an editorial page columnist for the Chicago Tribune, will be the keynote speaker at the 27th Annual ICPA Convention Feb. 19-20 at Chicago’s Double Tree Hotel Magnificent Mile Hotel.

Zorn, who also writes a blog, writes on a wide range of topics. A longtime columnist, Zorn is a University of Michigan graduate, where he was a senior editor on the Michigan Daily.

Other speakers at the annual two-day convention will include veteran journalists leading sessions on new media, photography, reporting, law and film criticism, among other topics. (more…)
